Checking for this should be easy and giving the player the option instead of moving forward. Since this can happen very early in this very long game, and not allowing someone to quit without punishment is simply ridiculous.
Example: Building a trading post instead of using the free power to build.

It's not clear in most cases that powers should be used.

Worth considering case
Giants: dig with workers
Nomads: not in dig bonus round and 3 or more dig with workers adjacent space
Swarmlings: upgrade to trading post with double coins

Even in these cases, interactive meaning may exists. ("I won't pass at next action.")

Well, at some point there is a line to draw, otherwise if we follow all the requests we will spend a lot of time and finish by building an AI that will play instead of the player ;)

There is a confirmation with the cost displayed before validating the action. It's up to the player to know what he/she can do at any moment in the game and to decide what is his/her best course of action.

Telling him/her that there is a better course of action that could be taken is a grey area, and some players may actually resent it. Have you never been irritated by this player at your table that always points to you a better action that you might take when you are playing? :D

I agree in most cases, but I just found that I apparently did not properly click on the swarmlings special action and then I paid for the upgrade, which of course killed the game. I did not expect that the click did not work, so I did not really read the standard notification, I guess. (I play fairly quickly usually.) I _do_ believe that a better warning is appropriate in this particular scenario.

What is needed, IMO, is not roll-back, though, but a better warning, like the warning for passing with special actions left.
